UC Capped Weighted GPA Calculator (Official 2026 A-G List)
Are you applying to the University of California (UC) system?
Calculating your high school GPA for UC admissions is more complex than a standard 4.0 scale. The UCs use a specific “Capped Weighted” formula that limits (caps) the number of extra points you get for Honors and AP courses.
Most generic calculators give you a wrong “Fully Weighted” score, which can mislead you about your eligibility. Use our free UC Capped Weighted GPA Calculator below to instantly see your true standing. We calculate all three versions of your GPA side-by-side using the official A-G Course List logic.
📊 Understanding Your 3 UC GPA Scores
When you enter your grades above, our tool provides three distinct GPAs. Admissions officers at Berkeley, UCLA, and other campuses look at these differently:
1. Unweighted GPA
This is your raw score without any extra points for difficulty. An ‘A’ in AP Biology counts the same as an ‘A’ in PE. (Max: 4.00)
2. UC Capped Weighted (Target)
This is the most important score. It gives extra points for Honors/AP courses, but caps the bonus at 8 semesters (4 full-year courses) between 10th and 11th grade. (Max: ~4.40)
3. Fully Weighted GPA
This score counts every Honors/AP point without a limit. While UCs use the capped version for eligibility, some campuses consider this for holistic review. (Max: 5.00)
🧮 How to Calculate UC Capped GPA (The Math)
If you want to do the math manually, follow the “Rogers Rule” used by the UC system:
- Convert Grades to Points: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0.
- Count Your Semester Courses: Only count “A-G” courses taken in the summer after 9th grade, 10th grade, and 11th grade. (Note: 9th and 12th grades are NOT part of the GPA calculation, but must be passed).
- Calculate Honors Points: Give yourself +1 point for each semester of a UC-approved Honors, AP, or IB course.
- Apply the Cap: If you have more than 8 semesters of honors points, reduce the bonus points to exactly 8.
- The Formula:
(Base Points + Capped Honors Points) ÷ Total Semester Courses = Capped GPA
Official A-G Grading Scale
| Letter Grade | Standard Points | Honors/AP Points |
|---|---|---|
| A (90-100%) | 4.0 | 5.0 |
| B (80-89%) | 3.0 | 4.0 |
| C (70-79%) | 2.0 | 3.0 |
| D/F (Below 70%) | 0.0 / 1.0 | No Bonus Points |
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does UC count Freshman (9th Grade) GPA?
No. The University of California does not include 9th-grade marks in the GPA calculation for admission. However, you must pass these classes to satisfy the “A-G” subject requirements.
What is the maximum Capped GPA I can get?
The highest possible UC Capped Weighted GPA is approximately 4.40. Even if you have straight A’s and took 12 AP classes, the “8-semester cap” prevents your score from going higher in this specific metric.
Do out-of-state Honors courses count?
Usually, no. For non-California residents, only AP (Advanced Placement) and IB (International Baccalaureate) courses carry extra weight. Standard “Honors” classes from other states generally count as standard courses (4.0 scale).
What classes count as “A-G” courses?
A-G courses include History, English, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Visual Arts, and College Prep Electives. Physical Education (PE), Health, and Teacher Assistant (TA) classes are typically NOT counted in the UC GPA.
