UPSC Engineering Services Exam Pattern & Syllabus For Electrical Engineering

UPSC ESE Electrical Engineering syllabus for Paper 1 & paper 2 is described below as per which the applicants of the exam can prepare themselves for the exam. Paper 1:

EM Theory: Electric & magnetic fields, guass’ law, amperes law, fields in dielectrics, conductors, magnetic materials, plane wave propagation, transmission lines

Electrical Materials: Band theory, conductors, semi- conductors, insulator, magnetic materials, ferro and ferri magnetism, ceramics, special semi- conductors

Control Systems: Mathematical modeling of physical systems, block diagrams and signal flow graphs, errors, nicols chart, elements of non- linear control analysis, pneumatic components

Electrical Circuits: elements, Kirchoff’s law, mesh and nodal analysis, natural response, transfer function, resonant circuits, 2 element network synthesis, properties of networks in poles and zeros.

Measurements and Instrumentation: Units and standards, Error analysis, measurement of current, voltage, -power, energy, capacitance, frequency, temperature, pressure, Data acquisition

Paper II:

Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits: Semiconductor devices, PN junctions and transistors, FET, Zener, tunnel, applications, regulators, rectifier circuits, photo diodes, voltage regulators, DC Amplifiers, combinational circuits, RAM & ROMs

Electrical machines and Power transformers: Magnetic circuits, analysis, Design of Power transformers, losses and efficiency, 3 phase transformer, Rotating machines, DC machines construction, excitation methods, circuits models, Losses, testing, efficiency, synchronous machines, construction circuit model, hunting, short circuit transients, induction machines, fractional KW motors, starting and speed control

Power Electronics: Power semiconductor devices, power transistor, GTOs, MOSFETs, SC to DC converter, 1 phase & 3 phase DC to DC conductors, pulse width modulation, sinusoidal modulation, switched mode power supplies

Microprocessors: Architecture, Simple assemble language programming, Interfacing for memory and I/O, applications of microprocessors in power systems

Communication Systems: Modulation types, AM, FM, PM, Demodulators, Noise and bandwidth considerations, digital communication, pulse code modulation and demodulation, carrier communication, multiplexing

Power Systems: Power stations, thermal stations, nuclear stations, pumped storage plants, economics, operating factors, power transmission lines, load flow studies, Z bus formulation, steady state stability, HVDC transmission
